- Abstract
- Ecorregiones marinas del mundo (MEOW) es una clasificación biogeográfica de las costas y plataformas del mundo. Es el primer sistema completo de clasificación marina con límites y definiciones claramente definidos y fue desarrollado para vincularse estrechamente con los sistemas regionales existentes. MEOW representa patrones a gran escala de especies y comunidades en el océano, y fue diseñado como una herramienta para planificar la conservación en una variedad de escalas y evaluar los esfuerzos de conservación y las brechas en todo el mundo. El sistema actual se enfoca en áreas costeras y de plataforma y no considera reinos en ambientes pelágicos o bentónicos profundos. Se espera que en un futuro cercano se diseñen sistemas paralelos pero distintos para biotas pelágicas y bentónicas profundas. El proyecto fue dirigido por WWF y The Nature Conservancy, con amplios aportes de un grupo de trabajo que representa a ONG clave, académicos y socios de conservación intergubernamentales. - Marine Ecoregions of the World (MEOW) is a biogeographic classification of the world's coasts and shelves. It is the first comprehensive marine classification system with clearly defined boundaries and definitions and was developed to link closely with existing regional systems. MEOW represents large-scale patterns of species and communities in the ocean, and was designed as a tool to plan conservation at a variety of scales and assess conservation efforts and gaps around the world. The current system focuses on coastal and shelf areas and does not consider kingdoms in pelagic or deep benthic environments. It is expected that parallel but distinct systems will be designed for deep pelagic and benthic biotas in the near future. The project was led by WWF and The Nature Conservancy, with extensive input from a working group representing key NGOs, academics and intergovernmental conservation partners.
